Do you remember when Johnny Cash sang at Folsom State Prison (1968)? I always enjoyed watching him singing to the inmates. Last night I had what felt like a similar experience. A few of us were privileged to join Ashton Brock, chaplain, in an extraordinary worship service at the prison where he ministers here in Virginia. I was so inspired listening to those men sing gospel songs, read Scripture, pray, clap hands, shout hallelujah, and respond to the preaching of the Word. At the conclusion of the service, a dozen men came forward to receive Christ as Savior….It was amazing! I’ll never forget it. I was struck by the fact that so many in that place have been set free spiritually, even though their stuck in prison. On the other hand, so many in our community are “free” to come and go as they please, but in reality, they are chained in bondage and sin. Scripture says, “if the son sets you free; you are free indeed.” It’s our mission to share the message of freedom in Virginia, Baltimore, Lithuania, and everywhere the Lord gives us the opportunity do so! Find someone to share the gospel with today…There’s no better feeling 🙂
Yesterday, I taught from Genesis 11 and 12 that God calls individuals to do great things, and I asked you to pray and ask God to speak to your heart about what he is calling you to do at this point in your life. The truth is that God uses ordinary folks to accomplish extraordinary things…I saw that first hand yesterday. Take a moment to pray again the prayer we shared in church: “God, lead me where you want me to go…give me the courage to do what you want me to do.”
